Evander court postpones bail application of three suspected of woman’s murder
Nontobeko Promise Murure (27) was robbed of her cellphone and other belongings before being fatally stabbed on March 15.
The Evander Magistrate’s Court will hear the bail application for three men accused of murdering Nontobeko Promise Murure (27) today (March 25).
The men made their first court appearance on March 18 after allegedly robbing Murure of her cellphone and other belongings before fatally stabbing her on March 15.
Despite being rushed to a local clinic, she succumbed to her injuries.
Outraged community members took swift action, apprehending the suspects and notifying the police. Upon investigation, authorities discovered Murure’s cellphone in one of the suspects’ rooms, leading to their arrest and subsequent murder charges.
Community members picketed outside, as the accused appeared in court, demanding that bail be denied and calling for a swift and decisive prosecution. Residents of eMbalenhle expressed concern over the rising murder rate in their community.
Simon Skhosana, a resident, voiced his distress over the escalating violence.

“It is worrying that eMbalenhle has become a playground for criminals. Earlier this year, criminals brutally murdered a man in Ext 21 and dumped his body in the Wellas River. Last month, a Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School learner was stabbed to death by another learner.
“Now, Nontobeko has also fallen victim to knife violence. How many more murders have gone unnoticed? This situation requires urgent intervention before it spirals out of control,” Skhosana stated.
Another resident, Music Nzukula, pointed out many of the suspects involved in these crimes are young men living in the community.
“As parents, we sometimes do not realise that our children live three different lives—at home, school, and in the streets. A child may seem well-behaved at home while involved in criminal activities elsewhere.
“Many people in eMbalenhle live in fear because of the growing number of robberies and murders. It has become unsafe to even go to the shop at night because of these young men armed with knives, pangas, and guns who terrorise the community,” said Nzukula.
He further urged the Department of Justice to impose harsher sentences for murder cases in eMbalenhle, emphasising the need to deter other young people from engaging in crime. Authorities continue their investigation while residents call for tougher law enforcement and community intervention to address the rising crime in the area.
