CWP keeps Standerton clean
Applicants of this initiative must be Lekwa residents of vulnerable groups such as women, youth and unemployed residents.
The Community Work Programme (CWP) is a government initiative providing part-time job opportunities for vulnerable South African citizens, including women and the youth.
According to Lubabalo Majenge, communications officer for the Lekwa Local Municipality (LLM), these programmes provide participants with income and stability.
“The participants engage in community work on a predictable basis, typically for a few days each month,” explained Majenge.
The CWP focuses on community development, as the work typically involves the maintenance of public assets. The participants learn skill sets that could benefit them in future and enhance their employability.
Applicants of this initiative must be Lekwa residents of vulnerable groups such as women, youth and unemployed residents.
Waiting lists are generated at a ward level and approved by the local reference committee.
A ward councillor must endorse all applicants.
Participants work in different sectors – early childhood development, agriculture, environmental development, infrastructure, health and social development and cleaning community halls and health clinics.
This week, the CWP spruced up the traffic department with the help of Lekwa employees.
According to Majenge, they cut and raked the grass in front of the building. They also cleaned up several illegal dumping sites across Lekwa.
