Blood service launches new initiative for youth

SANBS invites schools to participate.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) recently launched the #LifeGivas Network, a dynamic new campaign to inspire young people between 16 and 24 to become active blood donors.

According to Thandi Mosupye, senior manager of marketing, communication, and brand at SANBS, less than 1% of the population in South Africa is currently donating blood.

“SANBS is determined to shift this statistic by empowering a new generation of lifesavers,” said Mosupye.

The #LifeGivas Network seeks to mobilise schools, universities, and communities countrywide, creating a vibrant network of young people actively making a difference.

Schools and universities hosting blood drives until the end of October will have an opportunity to be recognised for their efforts with a live radio outside broadcast, offering them a unique platform to showcase their commitment to this life-saving cause.

According to Mosupye, social media will play an important role in driving the campaign, with students encouraged to produce videos and challenges to inspire their peers to get involved.

“We want to ignite a movement that fosters a culture of giving. The #LifeGivas Network is not just a campaign, it is a call to action for young people to become heroes through the simple yet impactful act of donating blood.

“By inspiring the youth, we aim to build a lasting culture of giving that will benefit our healthcare system for generations.”

As part of the campaign, SANBS invited schools to take part in this challenge. Schools can showcase their talent by performing a dance routine, skit, song, or war cry to encourage regular blood donations among the youth.

Winners of the live radio outside broadcast will be selected based on the number of blood pledges, blood drives hosted, new donors recruited, social media engagement, and the creativity of their war cry or video.

SANBS’s board of directors is not only focused on increasing blood donations but also on fostering a sense of community and social responsibility among South Africa’s youth.
