Standerton residents join 67 Blankets groups to crochet entire rugby field
The Standerton branch’s 10 members each handed in a blanket for the emoji and donated 35 blankets for the field’s border.
Standerton’s branch of the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day initiative travelled to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) for a nationwide collaboration with other 67 Blankets groups to celebrate United Nations Happiness Day.
The women dipped their toes in the ocean on March 20 before heading to Nelson Mandela University to admire the gigantic smiley face pattern laid atop the rugby field.
“It was an honour to see this tremendous project come to life and find our group’s blankets among the rest,” explained Sangeeta Daya, 67 Blankets’ ambassador for Standerton and Vrede.
Daya explained that the initial request was for 441 blankets to create the face, but over 4 000 knitters and crocheters volunteered for this task.
The Standerton branch’s 10 members each handed in a blanket for the emoji and donated 35 blankets for the field’s border.
Daya said the ladies did some of their best work for this project. Many completed their blankets in less than three months.
“It was an honour to see a small town like Standerton’s contribution on the map like that,” concluded Daya.
