Kinross residents live in fear of electrocution
Kinross residents are living in fear as crumbling electricity poles and low-hanging live wires loom dangerously close to their homes—turning daily life into a terrifying waiting game for the next potential tragedy.
Kinross residents are living in fear of electricity poles that are in the process of collapsing onto their houses. The low-hanging heavy current cable is also unsafe.
Nobuhle Dube has to watch her three children like a hawk. She is afraid that one might be electrocuted because Govan Mbeki Municipality is not maintaining its infrastructure.
She said it has been reported to the municipality and their ward councillor, but they have only received empty promises.
“We fear that we might be the victims of municipal negligence. We often hear of someone being electrocuted or being killed by an exploding transformer,” lamented Dube.
Sipho Vezi said he cannot even sleep at night when there is wind because of fear that the poles and the cable might fall on top of his house and electrocute him and his family.

“Everyone knows that the electricity is dangerous. We are sitting on a time bomb because of the incompetent leaders who don’t care about our wellbeing.
“How can you neglect such a life-threatening problem? It seems the municipal officials will only come out after one of our children has been electrocuted.
“The municipality must act now. They must either fix these poles or remove them and install cables underground for our safety,” said Vezi.
Donald Green, the municipality’s media liaison and content development officer, said the Electrical Department will be attending to the problems.
Green also said some of these poles were damaged during a storm.
“We request residents to bear with us and stay safe and aware of the dangerous areas until we do the repairs,” said Green.
