Children play in dumped waste as danger grows in Ext 8, Standerton

Our visit revealed large waste heaps at the heart of the community.

The heaps of waste accumulating in Ext 8 pose a serious health and safety risk to children living in the area. The Standerton Advertiser visited the site on June 4 to investigate progress on the ongoing construction of the Ext 8 hall.

Our visit revealed large waste heaps at the heart of the community.

According to resident Wandile Afrika Dlamini, they have nowhere else to discard their household waste, leaving them no choice but to dump and burn it in an open field at the centre of the community.

“The municipal trucks don’t collect waste here, and there’s no designated site for us to take it,” said Dlamini.

He added that children often play in the waste, getting cuts and bruises from sharp objects.

He recalled an incident when a child was rushed to the emergency room after drinking an unknown substance found on the heap.

Vusi Majola, another resident, said the community had requested a large bin from the municipality to manage the waste, but they had not received a response. He warned that the pile remains a danger to everyone in the area.

“When we burn the waste, the smoke harms people who live nearby,” Majola said.
