Man appears in court for murder of Volksrust cop

Constable Khulani Chabangu (29), stationed at Volksrust Police Station, was shot and killed in the line of duty at a local salon in Lillydale, Calcutta, on May 30.

After a grueling manhunt, the Hawks, National Crime Intelligence (NCI), and the Calcutta Task Team arrested 25-year-old Tumelo Kgoedi for the robbery and murder of a police officer from Volksrust.

Constable Khulani Chabangu (29), stationed at Volksrust Police Station, had responded to reports of an armed robbery in progress at a local salon in Lillydale, Calcutta, on May 30.

According to reports, Chabangu was robbed of his clothes and vehicle before being fatally shot in the chest. The suspect then fled the scene with cash and cellphones taken from the salon.

Following intensive investigations, authorities apprehended Kgoedi on June 6. He was found in possession of two cellphones, one of which is believed to have been stolen during the incident.

Further investigation led officers to the home of one of Kgoedi’s close associates, where a firearm with a filed-off serial number and four live rounds were recovered. The associate managed to evade arrest.

Kgoedi made a brief appearance in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on June 9 and remains in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 17.
