Boy from Secunda faces new health setbacks as family seeks second opinion
His grandmother, Georgina Solomon, suspects poor oxygen circulation may be the cause. Logan finds walking problematic and cannot stand for long.
Logan Dyssel (11), born on October 21, 2013, with a congenital heart defect, has undergone three open-heart surgeries. He is also completely deaf and communicates with his family through sign language.
Recently, Logan suffered a setback with new symptoms emerging. His legs have begun turning purple-blue with orange spotting and swelling, and there are signs of a defect in his left foot.

His grandmother, Georgina Solomon, suspects poor oxygen circulation may be the cause. Logan finds walking problematic and cannot stand for long.
“He’ll walk a short distance and sign to us that his leg is ‘broken’. We’ve noticed his left foot is growing skewed when he stands,” said his mother, Sammy Dyssel.
In addition, Logan is losing teeth and experiencing chest pain and discomfort near the scars from his previous surgeries.

He was admitted to the Sunninghill Hospital in Sandton on May 28 for tests and discharged the next day. According to Dyssel, doctors said Logan’s muscles are weakening and recommended inserts for his shoes. An abdominal and chest sonar for the chest pain came back normal.
Doctors now also suspect Logan may have autism, citing violent outbursts when he is not understood or receives instructions he resists.
“He needs a follow-up, but we are considering a second opinion. We didn’t get clear answers, and we’re especially concerned about the leg discolouration and foot deformity. He can barely walk short distances,” said Dyssel. “We don’t understand how autism wasn’t picked up in previous visits.”
While Logan has medical aid, it does not cover all costs, leaving his parents responsible for shortfalls and travel expenses. Dyssel raises funds by selling second-hand clothes.
