Library closure frustrates eMbalenhle residents

eMbalenhle residents express growing frustration as their community library remains closed well past the scheduled reopening, impacting students’ access to vital study resources.

eMbalenhle residents are frustrated over the continued closure of their community library, saying the delay affects their children’s education.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) initially announced in February that the library would close for maintenance until April 30. However, nearly two months after that deadline, the facility remains shut.

Concerned resident Thabo Mokoena said his children in Grades 11 and 12 are struggling to prepare for their midterm exams with no access to a study space.

“When we saw the notice about the February to April maintenance, we were worried. Some of us had to find money for taxi fare so our children could travel to the Secunda Library. Their education depends on research and access to a proper library. What about the children whose parents can’t afford transport?,” said Mokoena.

Mokoena also criticised the GMM for failing to update the public since the closure began. Sipho Sibiya, a high school learner, said he was turned away in early June when he tried to study at the library.

“I assumed the work was done, but when I got there, the gates were locked. A man said no one is allowed in because maintenance is still ongoing. He told me even the employees don’t know what’s going on,” says Sibiya.

Following complaints, the Ridge Times visited the site and confirmed that the library was still closed. A staff member at the scene confirmed that the public cannot access the building until renovations are complete.

Donald Green, the GMM media liaison, confirmed the closure began in February for roof repairs. He said the Department of Sports, Culture and Recreation funded the refurbishment.

“Most of the work is complete, but the lighting installation is not yet done. Without proper lighting, the library is not safe or suitable for public use,” said Green.

Green admitted the GMM failed to inform the public and schools about the delay. He assured residents that the library would reopen once lighting was installed.
