Level of Standerton’s Grootdraai Dam drops slightly

The Grootdraai Dam dropped from 100.6% to 100.4%.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) released its weekly State of Reservoirs report, detailing the current dam levels across Mpumalanga, on June 25.

In the statement, it called for conservative water use because the rainy season had officially given way to winter.

The report, compiled by Themba Khoza, detailed that average dam levels in Mpumalanga had dropped from 99.5% last week to 99.3%.

The Gert Sibande District also saw declines in water levels, dropping from 100.2% to an even 100%. Two dams in the district remained stable – the Vygeboom Dam remained at 100.3%, and the Heyshope Dam held steady at 100.4%.

All the other dams followed a downward trend.

The Grootdraai Dam dropped from 100.6% to 100.4%, the Nooitgedacht Dam from 100.3% to 100.2%, and the Jericho Dam from 100.9% to 100.3%.

The Westoe Dam dropped from 94.7% to 93.3%, and the Morgenstond Dam decreased from 100.2% to 100.1%. The report indicated that though most dams in the province remain above 100%, water conservation remains a national priority.

“A sustainable and reliable water supply depends not only on natural resources but on how responsibly citizens use the available supply,” stated Khoza.
