Dams in the district remain stable
The DWS urges water conservation despite stable water levels.
The Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) weekly state-of-reservoirs report released on August 7 reveals that most listed dams in the Gert Sibande district have remained stable.
The Vygeboom Dam, dropping from 100.2% to 100.1% is one of the two dams in the district that showed a decline. Westoe Dam also dipped from 85.8% to 83.5%.
Grootdraai Dam remained steady at 99.4%, while Nooitgedacht Dam was unchanged at 100%. Jericho Dam and Morgenstond Dam remained stable at 96.8% and 100.1% respectively. Heyshope Dam also kept steady at 100.3%.
Despite the stable water levels, the average provincial level in Mpumalanga dropped from 98.5% to 98.3%. The average water levels in the Gert Sibande District dropped from 99.1% to 99.0%.
The DWS urges the public to continue using water sustainably and responsibly despite last week’s stable water level reports.
“Use water wisely, and sparingly and prevent unnecessary water losses by fixing leaks and protecting water infrastructure from vandalism,” said Themba Khoza, spokesperson for the DWS.
Khoza emphasised that water conservation is the most effective way to ensure water security for current and future generations.
