Bethal’s DCS focuses on male officials‘ mental well-being

Male officials from the Department of Correctional Services gathered at the Kopanong Hall to discuss leadership, stress, and personal growth.

A Men’s Indaba event was hosted for the officials from the Department of Correctional Services, Bethal Management Area, on July 29.

The men gathered at the Kopanong Hall at the correctional centre and spoke about matters affecting their well-being. External stakeholders, including financial institutions, healthcare organisations, the Department of Social Development, and NGOs, supported the event.

Mzwamakhaya Dlepu, the area co-ordinator for corporate services, addressed the gathering, reminding the men of their God-given responsibility to lead. He urged them to take up leadership roles in their communities to help nurture and develop responsible individuals in society.

“We have a responsibility to lead society, but our challenges can make it extremely difficult. However, that should not discourage us from fulfilling our duty. The world needs our guidance.

“We are here to confront challenges, not only in the workplace, but also at home and in our communities. Let us not ridicule one another, but rather support each other in becoming better leaders at home and beyond,” said Dlepu.

Keynote speaker Dr Phil Pitjeng, a psychiatrist and senior clinical manager at the Ermelo Provincial Hospital, warned about the dangers of emotional fatigue and chronic stress among men.

“Men tend to avoid what bothers them. Instead, they talk about things like soccer or cars while suppressing their emotional struggles,” said Pitjeng.

“This behaviour can lead to decreased productivity in the workplace and, in severe cases, even suicide.”

He strongly encouraged the men to seek therapy and take care of their mental health. Abel Mashaba, the area commissioner of the Bethal Management Area, acknowledged that work-related, financial and personal stressors burden many officials.

He assured attendees that more wellness events like this one would be organised, as part of an ongoing effort to support the well-being of staff.
