eMbalenhle learners protest sexual abuse allegations, demand release of Sihle Mabena from police custody

Learners from several eMbalenhle schools protested at the local police station after Sihle Mabena’s arrest, demanding his release amid allegations of sexual abuse by teachers.

A sea of angry school learners dispersed from the entrance to the eMbalenhle Police Station only after Sihle Mabena was released from police custody this afternoon. He was arrested this morning for allegedly inciting learners to protest against alleged sexual abuse by teachers.

The management bodies of Sizwakele, Kiriyatswa, Kusasalethu and Thomas Nhlabathi secondary schools called police to intervene when learners began to protest and disrupt classes.

Hundreds of learners then made their way to the police station to demand Mabena’s release.

Classes were disrupted at four secondary schools in eMbalenhle today.

Here the station commander, Colonel Khuselwa Matrose, told the teenagers who were allegedly abused by educators to come forward and open cases, or to get their parents to accompany them to the police station.

While talks were underway between Matrose and the leaders of the youth, some learners apparently broke off from the crowd and looted tuck shops and street vendors.

However, the eMbalenhle police spokesperson, Constable Busi Mthethwa, said the police are not aware any looting incidents. In the meantime, Ridge Times has been informed that protesting is flaring up at KI Twala Secondary School.
