Water levels remain higher than last year

According to the latest State of Reservoirs report, water levels remain better than recorded in the same period last year.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) released its weekly State of Reservoirs report on September 10. The report monitoring dam levels shows that levels remain above the averages reported at the same time last year.

“Though water levels continue to decline, they remain satisfactory and significantly higher than during the same period last year,” stated Wisane Mavasa, DWS spokesperson, in his statement.

According to the report, average provincial dam levels have dropped from 96.7% to 96.0%, 8.9% higher than the 87.1% recorded last year.

In 2024, the Gert Sibande district average was 84.6%. This year, reports indicate that the district average has dropped from 97.7% to 97.0%.

All listed dams in the district recorded declines, with the Grootdraai Dam dropping from 98.6% to 97.5%, the Nooitgedacht Dam from 97.9% to 96.4%, the Vygeboom Dam from 99.4% to 98.9%, the Westoe Dam from 75.8% to 73.8%.

The Morgenstond Dam saw a marginal decline from 99.7% to 99.4%, and the Heyshope Dam from 99.8% to 99.7%. The DWS urges residents to continue using water sparingly and strengthen water conservation efforts to prevent unnecessary water losses.
