Municipality fixes high mast light at footbridge in eMbalenhle
The bridge had been in darkness for months after the light was vandalised, raising concerns among residents as crime incidents reportedly increased.
The Govan Mbeki Municipality has repaired the vandalised high mast light at the Wellas footbridge in eMbalenhle, restoring much-needed visibility and security to the area.
The bridge had been in darkness for months after the light was vandalised, raising concerns among residents as crime incidents reportedly increased.
Community members said the poorly lit bridge had become a hotspot for criminals ambushing unsuspecting pedestrians, particularly those walking to and from eMba Mall at night.
Some residents told Ridge Times they had witnessed robberies and assaults on the bridge, with criminals hiding underneath before attacking their victims. Others claimed they often heard screams at night, only to find bloodstains on the walkway the next morning.
“It was becoming dangerous. People were getting robbed almost every night. For women, it was even worse because some were assaulted or raped while crossing the bridge,” said one resident.

Residents also recounted a recent incident where a group of criminals pretended to befriend an elderly man before attempting to rob him of his pension money. Fortunately, community members intervened, and the suspects fled.
Municipal employees, assisted by members of the municipality’s executive mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma, were seen in the area ensuring the high mast light was repaired. Residents have welcomed the move, saying it will go a long way toward improving safety.
“We are relieved that the light is finally fixed. We hope the criminals will now think twice before targeting people here,” another resident added.
The Govan Mbeki Municipality urged residents to remain vigilant and report any criminal activities or further acts of vandalism to the authorities.
