Dra Mekaar hold a monthly meeting in Secunda

Guest speaker Liné de Vries spoke to Dra Mekaar members on the latest development of the baby saver called Baby Basket, which will be opening on September 19 at the SAVF Secunda Child and Youth Care Centre.

Members of the Dra Mekaar group gathered at NG Kerk Goedehoop Gemeente on September 10. Ds Diederich Kleynhans opened the morning with a scripture reading and prayer.

The guest speaker for the morning was Liné de Vries of the Tree-Seeds Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Secunda. The Tree-Seeds Foundation, together with the Ligdraers (Lightbearers), is working in collaboration with the SAVF Secunda Child and Youth Care Centre on the expansion of the baby safe house and a built-in Baby Saver called the Baby Basket.

The baby safe house can accommodate 10 babies.

The project officially kicked off in May, with Dra Mekaar brothers Johan and Hendrik Keyser and Antoinette Coetzee walking 30 km over several days to raise money for the cause.

The Baby Basket allows a mother or next of kin to anonymously and safely leave an infant in a secure, box-like structure, rather than abandoning the baby in a dustbin, gutter, or in any other unsafe manner.

Thus far, the project’s cost estimate is about R378 000, and thanks to the generosity of the public and businesses, the Baby Basket is nearly complete. The official opening is on September 19 at the SAVF Secunda Child and Youth Care Centre, from 10:00 to 15:00.

Birthday wishes for September go out to Netta Van Heerden, Johan Keyser, Girl van der Berg, Susan Alberts, Charlie Pretorius, Cathy Engelbrecht, Alta Fourie, Gary Visser, Sophia Myburgh, and Carlien Moolman.

Members will meet again on October 29. For more information, contact chairperson Eileen Bezuidenhout on 082 467 5307.
