Elders project brings solar power to Bethal communities
The project followed a community needs analysis and direct engagement with residents.
Thungela’s Elders Colliery Project delivered solar streetlights and portable inverters to the Vlakkuilen and Umcebo farm communities in Bethal’s Ward 15 on September 8.
The R2m initiative forms part of their Social Labour Plan (SLP), aimed at improving safety, energy security, and quality of life for more than 450 residents.
According to the company, the project followed a community needs analysis and direct engagement with residents, which highlighted major concerns such as poor lighting, frequent power outages, and the negative effects these had on households.
Tman Mphokane, general manager of the Elders Project, said solar power was identified as the most effective solution.
“Solar is a solution that works well in areas where the grid power supply is not reliable. Most importantly, it allows us to deliver a safe and consistent source of energy in places that have gone without power for too long, enhancing quality of life and safety within neighbourhoods,” said Mphokane.
Govan Mbeki Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma, praised the project as an example of what can be achieved through partnerships between government and the private sector.
“This initiative has instilled a sense of security in our community and made a meaningful contribution to improving dignity and quality of life,” said Zuma.
