Two from eMzinoni sentenced after child is shot dead

Blessings Motha (42) was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm, and Nokuthula Mahlangu (27) was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for culpable homicide after she accidently shot her sister’s five-year-old child.

Blessings Motha (42) and Nokuthula Mahlangu (27) received prison sentences in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on September 16.

Motha received seven years’ imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm, while Mahlangu got five years’ imprisonment for culpable homicide.

They received this sentence after the thorough investigation of eMzinoni Police Detective Sergeant Mluleki Methula.

According to Sergeant Cynthia Mtshweni, spokesperson for eMzinoni Police, Motha went to Mahlangu’s place of residence in the Tambo Section of eMzinoni on December 31, 2023, at around 21:10 with a stolen, unlicensed firearm.

“He showed Mahlangu the firearm, and she thought it was a toy gun. Mahlangu pointed the firearm at her sister’s five-year-old child and mistakenly shot the child,” said Mtshweni.

The child died in Bethal Hospital. eMzinoni Police Station commander, Captain Lucky Nkosi, congratulated Methula on his thorough investigation.
