Local learners join international competitors at science fair

Several learners from Secunda and the Gert Sibande region will participate in the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair, competing against peers from around the world.

Young scientists from across SA, Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mexico, Ireland, India and Russia will participate in the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair from October 6 to 10.

Many learners from Secunda will be among the 303 participants competing at the Emperors Palace Convention Centre. Many learners from different schools in Secunda will be part of the 303 young scientists competing in the fair at Emperors Palace Convention Centre.

The fair aims to open doors to future studies and careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI).

Participants from the Gert Sibande region include learners from Laerskool and Hoërskool Secunda, Hoërskool Hoogenhout, Oranjegloed Primary School, Laerskool Goedehoop, MD Coovadia Combined School, Ubuhlebuzile Secondary School and Stanwest Combined School.

The Gert Sibande region learners participating include:
• Aiden Pösch from Laerskool Secunda;
• Dineo Ratau, Jean-Roux Flack, Marlhuné Bezuidenhout, Mbavhalelo Mabunga and Sana Pathan from Hoërskool Secunda;
• Kyra Pretorius from Hoërskool Hoogenhout;
• Lakshit Sudarshan from Oranjegloed Primary School;
• Milan Zwarts and Philip du Preez Cloete from Laerskool Goedehoop;
• Praise Chidzwa from MD Coovadia Combined School; • Phumelele Lukhele and Nondumiso Nhlabathi from Ubuhlebuzile Secondary School;
• Moratuwa Raletsoho from Stanwest Combined School.
Many organisations sponsored prizes and bursaries worth R6m.
