Lekwa installs energy-saving lights to brighten streets
Lubabalo Majenge says the project is part of the Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) Programme to enhance public lighting, reduce electricity use and optimise energy use after dark.
The Lekwa Local Municipality (LLM) is installing energy-saving streetlights across Standerton to ensure every street is free of darkness at night.
According to LLM spokesperson Lubabalo Majenge, the project is progressing well.
“This project is part of the Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) Programme to enhance public lighting, reduce electricity use and optimise energy use after dark for the benefit of residents,” stated Majenge.
When inspecting the project’s progress, Mayor Sifiso Mngomezulu said it would promote sustainability and modernise Lekwa’s infrastructure.

“The retrofitting project has already begun across wards, with benefits including improved energy efficiency, better lighting and improved safety for residents,” said Mngomezulu.
According to Majenge, the LLM secured R4n in funding for the project, which includes installing high-mast lights and streetlights through an EEDSM grant. The project is being completed in phases across the municipality.
“I remain committed to making Lekwa a municipality that leads in energy efficiency, sustainable development and reliable service delivery,” stated Mngomezulu.
He concluded that Lekwa was building a sustainable future that benefitted all residents.
