Family wants justice for slain eMbalenhle man
Mkhapheni Mbatha was allegedly dead when the police dropped him off at the clinic.
Following the alleged police assault and death of Mkhapheni Mbatha, his family is seeking justice for his murder.
Witnesses claim they saw officers assault him before loading him into a minibus on October 2 in the Mandela section of eMbalenhle, Marikana.
A community member followed the vehicle to a clinic, where nurses asked why officers had brought in a man who was already dead.
Sandile Sibisi, a family member of Mbatha, told the Ridge Times that they are pleased the Independent Police Investigative Directorate visited and took statements from them and the eyewitnesses, and added that the family wants the officers responsible to be held accountable.
“We want to know the reason behind Mkhapheni’s murder. The police are supposed to protect us. We will not rest until he receives justice.
“This incident shocked our family members back home in KZN. Who will take care of his three-year-old son? Those police must be arrested as soon as possible, though that will not bring back Mkhapheni,” said Sibisi.
He added that the family is still arranging the burial. Although they do not yet have a date for the service, his body has already been taken to KZN.
