Department of Water and Sanitation holds indaba in Secunda
Goventment wants clean water for all in rural areas.
Stakeholders from the government, businesses, and Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) attended the Water and Sanitation Department’s indaba at the Sasol Recreation Club on October 7 and 8.
The national Department of Water and Sanitation partnered with Paradigm Shift Holdings to host the indaba about the water and sanitation challenges in Mpumalanga.
The various stakeholders who attended the indaba discussed and tried to find solutions for the critical water-related issues. Mishael Mashele, president of Paradigm Shift Holdings, said the indaba gave experts an opportunity to share their views on water-related topics through panel discussions.
“We hope to explore how to improve water supply and treatments, working together with the government for the benefit of communities. I believe this collaboration will contribute to local economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction,” said Mashele.

Participants at the indaba raised concerns about ageing water pipes and systems not properly maintained and repaired over the years. They also mentioned the risks of pollution and regulatory requirements to protect rivers and public health.
Resolutions reached after the indaba include delivering and implementing a model, increasing investment through financing options to ensure the financial viability of the sector, enhancing and strengthening technical and operational capacity and efficiency.
Fighting criminality in the water and sanitation sector was also one solution. Mpumalanga acting premier Speed Mashilo acknowledged the resolutions and urged the parties involved to make having a clear vision, strategy, and plans with clear timelines for the implementation of the resolutions their key priorities.
“Water is not only a basic human right but the basis of life. It is vital for health, agriculture, industry and overall socio-economic development,” said Mashilo.

He emphasised that the government’s goal is to achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation for the people in Mpumalanga.
He urged residents to implement water-saving practices such as fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, and re-using water.
David Mahlobo, deputy minister of the national Department of Water and Sanitation, said it was important to collaborate with stakeholders to address water challenges such as infrastructure deficiencies, pollution and promote access to water for all.
“I thank all private sectors and the government for this initiative,” said Mahlobo.
He said the government is committed to ensuring that communities in urban and rural areas receive consistent potable water and dignified sanitation services.
