Crochet Christmas tree lights up Secunda Mall

What began as a festive decoration will soon become a gift of warmth when Secunda’s crochet Christmas tree is transformed into blankets for the less fortunate.

The Secunda Mall Christmas tree’s lights were switched on during a small event in front of Symphony’s Café on October 21.

Women from local crochet groups had crocheted blocks, which were sewn together to decorate the tree. Danelle van der Watt, the Secunda Mall marketing manager, said they used 2 600 blocks for the 6m-high tree.

After Christmas, the mall will repurpose the blocks into blankets for needy people. The mall has already collected about 3 000 blocks, including those on the tree, and expects to hand out 30 blankets before next winter.

The mall sponsored wool worth R10 000 and distributed it to local crochet groups. The community also donate wool, which they put in collection boxes at the mall.

The mall’s management team thanked the community, the crochet groups and everyone involved for their support of this heartwarming project.
