Girl from Standerton grows rugby dream through elite camp
Standerton High School learner Angel Nxasane recently attended the U16 Elite Player Development Camp in the Western Cape after discovering her passion for rugby last year.
Standerton High School learner Angel Nxasane recently attended the U16 Elite Player Development Camp for rugby hosted at Boland Landbou in the Western Cape.
Nxasane said she started playing in the fourth term of 2023 and plays fly-half, a position that challenges her and takes her out of her comfort zone.
“I would say the position chose me. It forces me to stay vigilant at all times and be vocal in a game,” said Nxasane.
She believes there is ample room for growth and excellence in this position. Despite not having any background in the sport, Nxasane took a chance when Standerton High School announced the formation of a girls’ rugby team and soon discovered her hidden talent.
She said she loves the diversity of rugby and how the sport accommodates players of all shapes and sizes.
“I love that being part of a rugby team builds confidence, self-worth and character,” said Nxasane.
She enjoys the strong sense of teamwork rugby promotes and said that to play the game successfully, players must trust their teammates, a trust that often leads to lifelong friendships.
When Nxasane is not on the rugby field, she participates in javelin, discus and shot put. Outside of sport, she enjoys tending her grandmother’s garden. Nxasane described the Elite Player Development Camp as challenging, educational and fun.
“It was great exposure to how the professional side of the game works,” she said.
The camp showed her what it takes to play rugby professionally. She improved her skills as a fly-half and learnt to perform her role under pressure.
“I learned to embrace pain, seize opportunities and be courageous at all times,” explained Nxasane.
Though she dreams of playing rugby professionally, Nxasane also plans to attain a law degree as a backup career.
Her role models include professional rugby player Manie Libbok and her coach, Kenny Kabye. For lifestyle and faith, she draws inspiration from her aunt.
Nxasane said she will continue to train and excel in the sport until she reaches her goals.
