Daredevils run in undies for cancer awareness in Standerton

Marathon runners took to the streets in their underwear to spread awareness for cancer.

Marathon clubs in Standerton took part in the national Daredevil Cancer Awareness run on October 31. The run aims to spread awareness of prostate cancer.

“Our communities are under the impression that cancer will not affect them. We are trying to spread awareness so individuals get tested for cancer,” stated Muziwhake Ndebele.

To encourage men to take pride in their bodies, the participants ran in their underwear. The runners took off from the Shell garage in Stanwest at 05:00 and ran through the Standerton CBD.

Members of the Standerton Marathon Club, SAPS Marathon Club, Eskom Marathon Club, Sasol Marathon Club, and Hollywood Bets Marathon Club joined community members for the run.

According to Ndebele, the run was touching, healing, and left participants feeling fulfilled for hours after the run. The run was organised by the Pacemakers running group and was made possible by the Department of Safety.

According to Ndebele, they plan to expand the run next year and provide a mobile clinic offering cancer screenings.
