Campus launches garden initiative in Standerton

Campus students and faculty celebrated the launch of the One TVET One Garden initiative, a programme promoting sustainable gardens, food security and hospitality opportunities.

The Gert Sibande Standerton Campus welcomed the One TVET One Garden initiative on October 28. The initiative brought together agriculture and hospitality sector students, and will launch at TVET colleges across SA to promote food security, sustainability and entrepreneurship.

Agri Africa Development (AAD), a training organisation focused on increasing black youth representation in agriculture, launched the programme, as well as three interlinked programmes that bring the two sectors together.

The first programme, One TVET One Garden, focuses on planting gardens that students will maintain. Vegetables from these gardens will be used in the Rising Chef competition, when the country’s top 18 chefs compete for the title.

The 18 participants will also be guaranteed automatic internships on MSC Cruises and at several hotels.

The third programme, the Legacy Creator Awards, recognises students who participate in these initiatives and rewards them for their hard work. The students and faculty celebrated the launch by dancing at the end of the presentation.
