Evander Gold Mines lead river clean-up campaign

The campaign promotes community pride and environmental responsibility, and the mine aims to make it a regular event to educate the public and maintain cleaner surroundings.

To promote a clean environment, Evander Gold Mines (EGM) started cleaning the Winkelhaak Spruit and surrounding areas.

The campaign promotes community pride and environmental responsibility, and the mine aims to make it a regular event to educate the public and maintain cleaner surroundings.

EGM officials, employees, waste pickers, and volunteers joined hands to clean up public spaces, remove litter, and reduce illegal dumping.

Educational sessions were conducted at Osizweni Primary School and Osizweni Secondary School, teaching learners about the three R’s of reduce, reuse, and recycle.

The initiative also focused on raising awareness about recycling, waste management, and the importance of community involvement in keeping the area clean. EGM donated six dustbins, six brooms, and six rakes to Osizweni Secondary School.

Elikhulu Tailings Retreatment Plant manager Joseph Mohlakoana said the programme was not only beneficial for improving the appearance of the Evander area but also for raising awareness about environmental issues and fostering community participation and pride.

“This must be an ongoing effort to maintain the area and reinforce the message of a clean environment,” said Mohlakoana.

“This campaign shows that small actions, when done together, can make a big difference. It highlights EGM’s commitment to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and sustainable practices.”
