Grootdraai Dam decreases after opening of sluice gates

Wisane Mavasa, spokesperson for the DWS, said average dam levels in Mpumalanga showed slight increases from 86.5% to 95.7%.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) released their weekly state of reservoirs report on November 26, detailing the average dam levels across Mpumalanga.

According to the statement, compiled by Wisane Mavasa, spokesperson for the DWS, the average dam levels in Mpumalanga showed slight increases from 86.5% to 95.7%.

The Gert Sibande District average dropped slightly from 99.0% to 98.1%. Grootdraai dam showed a decrease from 104.5% to 100.8%. Heyshope Dam declined from 101.3% to 100.4%.

“It should be noted that some drops in water levels are a result of opening sluice gates in terms of dam safety protocols,” stated Mavasa.

Nooitgedacht Dam recorded an increase in water levels, increasing from 97.8% to 99.9%. Vygeboom dam showed slight improvements from 99.1% to 100.8%, Jericho dam showed a significant increase from 89.2% to 91.0%.

Westoe Dam continues to show the lowest dam levels in the district, increasing from 59.5% to 61.5%. Morgenstond Dam showed slight increases from 99.2% to 100.8%.

“The DWS reminds the public that South Africa remains a water-scarce country,” stated Mavasa.

The public is encouraged to practice responsible, wise and prudent use of available water sources.
