Secunda Senior Citizens Club comes to an end

Through a unanimous decision, the Secunda Senior Citizens Club will no longer continue due to the lack of interest and participation.

It was a sad day for the Secunda Senior Citizens Club (SSCC), as its last meeting on December 3 marked the end of the club.

Members got together for one last time for a Christmas lunch held at La Krust. The SSCC was founded in February 1979. It is unclear who the founding members were at that time.

The last days of the SSCC fell under the leadership of Carol Lumley (chairperson), Jehan Kahn (vice chairperson), Sharen Wickens (treasurer) and Kathy Brown (secretary).

The decision to dissolve the club was made at the AGM held on October 22, due to a lack of membership and poor attendance, rendering it unviable to continue.

“Sadly, the attendance and support for the SSCC have been disappointing over the past months,” said Wickens.

She said it is heartbreaking that all has come to an end.

A “Will” was drawn up in 2022, as membership was already dropping.

The will was approved and held by a bank, ensuring that the proceeds of the two SSCC accounts would be distributed to local NPOs should the club dissolve.

The two nominated and approved NPOs decided on at the AGM are SAVF Child and Youth Care Centre and the Adullam Trust.

Over decades of SSCC, many members enjoyed dress-ups (fancy and hobo), Easter bonnet competitions, outings, sporting events, fun at Bingo mornings, and making friends and socialising.

The longest SSCC members were Steve and Edith Gay for over 30 years. Sharen Wickens and Kathy Brown were members for over 20 years.
