All dams in Gert Sibande stand above 100%
Grootdraai Dam moved from 100.8% to 102.6%.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) released its weekly state of reservoirs report on December 1, highlighting the impact of continuous rainfall on dams across Mpumalanga.
According to the report, compiled by DWS spokesperson Wisane Mavasa, the province continues to record steady improvements in water levels.
Mpumalanga’s average dam levels increased from 96.5% to 97.4%, while the Gert Sibande District average rose from 98.1% to 99.4%. Mavasa noted that the majority of listed dams in the district remain above 100%.
The only dams still below full capacity are Jericho Dam and Westoe Dam.
• Jericho Dam increased from 91.0% to 94.5%.
• Westoe Dam climbed from 61.5% to 67.3%.
Several dams exceeded the 100% mark:
• Grootdraai Dam moved from 100.8% to 102.6%.
• Nooitgedacht Dam increased from 99.9% to 101.0%.
• Vygeboom Dam rose from 100.8% to 101.4%.
Morgenstond Dam was the only dam to experience a slight decline, dropping marginally from 100.8% to 100.3%.
“The DWS reminds the public that despite rising water levels, South Africa remains a water-scarce country,” Mavasa stated.
He emphasised that water conservation remains essential for sustainable and reliable water supply for current and future generations.
The department also urged the public to practise rainwater harvesting and to exercise caution on rainy days to prevent loss of life.
