eMbalenhe SAPS closes 16 days of activism with GBV fun walk
During the event, people living with disabilities highlighted that they too experience GBV but often feel overlooked in response efforts.
In closing the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) on December 10, eMbalenhle SAPS, Zimeleni Disability Association, the Evander Magistrate’s Court and several community organisations held a fun walk aimed at raising awareness about GBV and encouraging stronger community participation in the fight against the scourge.
The 16 Days of Activism campaign is an annual global movement observed from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to December 10.
During the event, people living with disabilities highlighted that they too experience GBV but often feel overlooked in response efforts.
Representatives used the platform to call for more inclusive services at policing level. They handed over a memorandum to eMbalenhle Police Station Commander, Colonel Khuselwa Matrose, outlining key demands.

These include:
• A Braille machine at the police station for visually impaired community members
• Availability of sign-language interpreters for Deaf victims
• Ensuring the station facilities fully accommodate all forms of disability
• Receiving the memorandum, Matrose said the station strives to cater for people with all disabilities and remains committed to improving accessibility where needed.
