Standerton says goodbye to beloved Cansa nurse

Annerie Jacobs will be remembered as a woman who kept her heart and door open to anyone in need.

The community of Standerton mourns the loss of Annerie Jacobs, who succumbed to cancer on December 6. Annerie had been a resident of Standerton since 1990 and dedicated the last 18 years of her life to helping cancer patients. She was widely recognised as a pillar of the community.

According to family member Edwin van Hansen, Jacobs was a loving and caring woman who always kept her heart and door open to anyone in need.

“She always provided a shoulder to cry on or an ear to listen to people’s stories, despite any challenges she might have been facing in her own life,” said Van Hansen.

When she was not supporting cancer patients, she was a devoted mother, providing a nurturing home for her family. Van Hansen added that the family will greatly miss their time together playing board games, having braais, and sharing laughter.

Annerie’s cancer patients and the elderly she often cared for described her as a guardian angel. Her son, Theo Jacobs, said he will most miss taking Sunday drives with his mother, during which they would talk about everything while she offered encouragement and advice.

Annerie was diagnosed with Metastatic Myeloma in August 2024. According to Theo, she remained positive until the very end, believing she would recover, as she had witnessed many others do.

Van Hansen expressed gratitude to the community for the immense support Annerie received in her final weeks.

“The community she cared for so deeply came together, not only financially, but with comforting words, smiles, laughter, and stories,” he said.

“We will never be able to express how grateful we are to each and every generous and caring soul who made a difference since her diagnosis.”

“As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the beautiful life she lived – one of love, compassion, and unwavering support for those in need,” Van Hansen concluded.

Annerie Jacobs’ funeral took place at the AGS Church on December 12.
