The former Head of Bethal Correctional Centre, Enoch Chonco, bids farewell and commences a new chapter of his career. Chonco will assume his new rank as the area commissioner of the Empangeni management area in the KwaZulu-Natal Province.
Executive members, together with managers and officials from all Correctional Centres in the Bethal Management Area, recently gathered at Kopanong Hall of Bethal Correctional Centre to bid him farewell.
Eulogies and speeches of well-wishes were the order of the day.
Bethal Centre’s coordinator of operational support, Veli Msibi, admired Chonco’s professionalism and leadership style. He said that Chonco had very high respect for subordinates; however, he had intolerance towards ill-discipline, particularly, late coming.
“He demonstrated good leadership and direction when it comes to the implementation of organisational policies,” said Msibi.
Chonco mentioned that it was not easy at the beginning of his journey because some officials were not happy with his management style and decision-making.

However, he is happy that they have found a common understanding that made it easy to work together until his last day at Bethal Correctional Centre.
Chonco is content with the progress that has been made in the entire Management Area, and he pleaded with the officials to keep the fire burning.
“Bethal Management Area is known as the best. Therefore, I am pleading with everyone within the Bethal Management Area to keep up the sterling job,” said Chonco.
He assured the executive and officials of Bethal Management Area that it is not the end of the road because his departure will give them a chance to share knowledge.
“We have been together for more than a decade, and I am sure that you have learnt from me as I have learnt from you. As I leave for KwaZulu-Natal, I will not be reluctant to pick up the phone when I need your assistance, and I expect the same from you,” said Chonco.
He sent his profound gratitude to the executive, managers and officials of Bethal Management Area as well as the community at large, for the 11 splendid years he spent with them.
