Animal shelter in Evander celebrates one year
KHAWS look back at a year of being the change they wish to see.
The past year has been one of resilience, compassion, and steady progress for NPO Khulula Animal Welfare Society (KHAWS).
Despite significant challenges since opening on February 3, 2025, particularly in building momentum and support as a fully donation–funded organisation, the team has grown stronger, more united, and more determined than ever to make a meaningful difference.
Since opening, KHAWS has taken in 51 stray, 104 surrendered, and 15 abandoned dogs. Eight dogs have been claimed, 75 have been adopted, and 42 have been euthanised.
There were 25 stray and 65 surrendered cats. 23 have been adopted and 45 euthanised. One hedgehog is successfully being rehabilitated.

These figures reflect both the scale of the need in the community and the impact of the care, rehabilitation, and rehoming efforts carried out by the KHAWS team and its supporters.
“A major milestone this year was completing our transition from an NPC to an NPO, as well as achieving PBO status,” said KHAWS’s Stefanie Burr-Dixon.
This now enables KHAWS to issue 18A tax certificates for all donations received. This strengthens the organisation’s sustainability and ability to support more animals in need.
“We extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported us, whether by sharing our posts, joining the KHAWS Angels program by sponsoring a kennel, donating goods or funds, or offering their time at events and weekend volunteer sessions. Each act of kindness has played a part in keeping our doors open and our mission alive,” said Burr-Dixon.
KHAWS are looking ahead to a year filled with promise and purposeful projects. Their Sasol-4-Good application is currently in the final stages of approval, and they are preparing to undertake several key upgrades, including:
• Renovating the cattery roof
• Building a catio to enrich the lives of the cats
• Installing a proper sewage system
• Refurbishing the external toilet facilities
“This is only the beginning. Our list of improvements continues to grow as we strive to create a safer, kinder, and more comfortable environment for every animal that comes through our doors.”
“Together, we look forward to another year of compassion in action and continued commitment to being the change we wish to see in the world,” concluded Burr-Dixon.
