Beauties from Standerton compete in pageant and raise money for farm school
The event highlighted the importance of creating opportunities that build self-esteem and broaden horizons for children growing up in farm areas.
Learners from farm communities around Standerton took to the stage with confidence and pride when Ulwazi Primary School hosted a beauty contest on February 13 at its Thuthukani premises.
The event, held at the rural farm school, aimed to motivate learners by reminding them that they can achieve their dreams regardless of where they live or learn. According to Nomvula Radebe, a teacher and chairperson of the school’s entertainment committee, the contest served a dual purpose.
“It was not only about beauty. The contest also served as a fundraising initiative for the school while at the same time creating a meaningful platform to recognise and nurture learners’ confidence, public speaking abilities, creativity and talent,” said Radebe.

Radebe explained that as a rural school situated in Thuthukani, Ulwazi Primary continues to face challenges related to limited resources, including inadequate sporting and entertainment facilities. However, she emphasised that the learners consistently demonstrate remarkable talent, potential and determination — often comparable to those from well-resourced schools.
“Our learners continue to shine despite the challenges we face. This initiative shows that where a child comes from does not determine how far they can go,” said Radebe.
The event was well supported by the school community and highlighted the importance of creating opportunities that build self-esteem and broaden horizons for children growing up in farm areas.
