Mining company gives towards waste transfer station in eMbalenhle
The community’s well-being remains central to the company’s initiatives.
A mining company, Thungela Resources, has contributed R2.1m towards phase one of the development of a waste transfer station in eMbalenhle.
This marks a significant step towards improving waste management infrastructure in the area.
The initial phase will cover key preparatory work, including an Environmental Impact Assessment, geophysical studies, and designs and technical drawings required before construction.
The project was identified during the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) meetings, highlighting its importance in addressing service delivery needs within the community.
Speaking on behalf of Thungela, Edrich Welthagen said the community’s well-being remains central to the company’s initiatives.

“The eMzinoni Multi-Purpose Centre provides a shared space where people can gather, access services and take part in programmes that support social development,” said Welthagen.
“The work in eMbalenhle will also help lay the groundwork for a waste management facility that will benefit households and create cleaner, healthier public spaces.”
He added that these initiatives form part of Thungela’s broader commitment to socio-economic development in communities surrounding its operations, with a focus on strengthening local infrastructure and improving access to essential services.
Executive Mayor of the municipality, Nhlakanipho Zuma, welcomed the partnership, noting its positive impact.

“The implementation of these projects underscores the value of effective public-private collaboration,” said Zuma.
“We are pleased to be part of a partnership that strengthens infrastructure, supports service delivery, and improves the lives of residents.”
In addition to the waste transfer station, Thungela’s Isibonelo Colliery has completed upgrades to the eMzinoni Multi-Purpose Centre, which has now been officially handed over to the municipality.
This R10.5 million investment has enhanced the centre’s role as a hub for community activities, social services, and public events.
The project also delivered meaningful economic benefits, creating 64 temporary jobs and subcontracting opportunities for 33 local businesses in the eMzinoni and Bethal communities.
