Secunda Mall gives back to community
Children with autism at Belinah Stimulation Centre in eMzinoni get warm winter blankets.
SECUNDA – As part of Secunda Mall’s Take Heart initiative, 3 500 squares for blankets were collected.
Danelle van der Watt, spokesperson for Secund Mall, said the ganny blanket project began as a festive initiative when the giant 6m-tall Christmas tree was decorated with squares in December, and now, together with the community, they have made 35 warm blankets.
“This has been an incredible journey and the giving did not stop after the festive season,” said Van der Watt.
“It took 14 months for the project to come to a full circle and each square, now stitched together to make the blankets, was knitted and crocheted with care and kindness.”

The staff of Secunda Mall and other role players visited the Belinah Stimulation Centre in eMzinoni on April 29 to hand out the blankets.
Van der Watt said this centre supports children with autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome, and their resources are very limited.
“Seeing the blankets reach their new home reminded us that a little truly goes a long way.”
The centre relies on public donations and is still in need of ongoing support.
The non-profit organisation, Tree Seeds, helped the mall management with the project and handed out the blankets.
