Baby in channel shocks Mandela community

Residents said it may happened the child was left in the storm water channel by someone from other extensions to hide evidence.

Const Busi Mthethwa said police opened an inquest docket after a baby’s body was found in a bag in a stormwater channel in Ext 16, known as Mandela Section, Monday, July 25.

According to the community, a nayope addict found the little body in the bag. He had thought that the bag might contain valuables which he could sell for drug money.

They said they were shocked when the man came running, shouting about the child in the bag.

“We were busy with our day-to-day things when we hear someone shouting about a child in the bag.

“As the responsible residents, we heed the call. The man led us to the stormwater channel,” said Mivo Potswa.

“At first we thought that the man might have been confused, but when he opened that big blue bag, some of us run for our lives because of what we saw,” said Potswa.

Community members at Ext 16, known as Mandela in eMbalenhle are still shocked after a dead baby was found in a bag in a stormwater channel.

Residents speculated that the infant was left in the stormwater channel by someone from another extension to hide evidence.

Some claimed this is not the first baby that had been dumped.

Police and emergency personnel were summoned to the scene and the baby was certified dead.

Police said they are investigating the matter.
