Transformer theft leaves areas of Bronkhorstspruit in the dark

Residents suspect this is the work of a syndicate.

A replacement transformer is apparently on its way to Bronkhorstspruit from Witbank.

This after communities from the Klipeiland- and Arbor areas in Bronkhorstspruit were left in the dark following the theft of a transformer on February 10.

The Bronkhorstspruit Dam area could switch to a backup line, but Klipeiland smallholdings and Arbor Road have no backup line,” said Cecillia Knox, community leader.

Many businesses and households are affected by this power outage.

According to Johan Nel, the owner of Klipeiland Pebbles, the power outage is taking a toll on his business.

“When we got to work on Monday there was no electricity and we still do not have electricity.

“I already had to send home 12 of my casual workers, and if we do not have electricity restored by Monday, I will have to start a generator; we simply cannot afford this.”

Nel told Streeknews that the community speculates about a syndicate’s involvement.

“How else would it be possible to break a transformer from its foundation without anyone noticing?

“They had to use a truck and crane, had to have a lot of time and must have known exactly at what times the security guards did their rounds.”

Nel further stated that there are many smallholdings in the area. “Not all have access to solar or generator or funds to fuel one.”

Ward 100 Councillor Johannes Bekker said the reconnection process could take up to two days, further extending the power disruption.

“Given the circumstances, residents are advised to make contingency plans, including to use alternative cooking methods such as braais and gas stoves for evening meals.

“Authorities are investigating the theft, and Eskom is exploring measures to prevent similar incidents in future.”

Bekker encouraged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
