Residents of Ex 2 blocked the Govan Mbeki Municipality technical yard gate and demanded electricity on Monday, August 15.
These residents claim to have been without electricity for days because of a damaged transformer and a faulty cable which the municipality incorrectly installed.
According to the residents, they have been plagued with electricity outages for the past five years.
“We are tired of the municipality’s empty promises.
“When we call them, they are always in a meeting or not answering at all.
“We decided to block the gate because of all their lies,” said Vusi Mahlangu.
Residents said their damaged transformer’s breaker was stolen because it not working, and the cables the municipality had installed several months ago keep on exploding.
They claim the municipality promised to install a temporary transformer that will supply them with electricity, but nothing happened.
“If it is not the transformer that burns out, it is the cable that explodes.
“They are now they are telling us they don’t have cables in their stock,” said Mahlangu.
Donald Green, acting communications manager at the municipality, said complaints were never reported to the municipality call centre.
“A group of people did, however, go to the technical yard on Monday to complain about a power outage and electricity was restored to the affected households in line with the municipal service standards.
“A permanent transformer will be installed in that area to deal with the overload.”
