GMM terminated the Eendracht sewer project contract

Mayor says the municipality will hold ‘unpatriotic and greedy’ contractors accountable.

The work performance of the company appointed to install a sewer network in Eendracht was so poor that the Govan Mbeki Municipality was forced to terminate its contract with them.

The executive mayor, Nhkanipho Zuma, said this on April 11, claiming the contractor also could not complete the job.

“We are re-scoping the remaining work and will then advertise for a new tender to complete the project.”

Zuma said these types of projects are time-sensitive. He referred to most contractors as being unpatriotic and greedy.

“Some of them get excited when they see the project’s money figure and then forget it is for doing the work for which they have been appointed.

“They must do the work before they can enjoy that money. We, as the municipality, must hold them accountable,” said Zuma.

The Eendracht community wanted to know where is the contractor that was supposed to develop a sewer network.

They were initially overjoyed when Zuma announced in 2021 the building of a sewer network worth R26m.

This project, which would have supplied job opportunities to locals, was expected to be completed in 2022, but the contractor has since disappeared, and the work is incomplete. Residents are suffering by using septic tanks. The municipality must drain regularly.

Zuma said at the project’s soil-turning ceremony these septic tanks were an expensive problem, especially during the summer rainy season when the municipality must send extra trucks to drain them.

He also said septic tanks undermine human dignity, and the GMM’s goal was to provide everyone with water-borne toilets.
