A service provider will be appointed ‘soon’ to fix the collapsing road in Trichardt

It is now a year since the road collapsed at the bridge on the left emergency lane on the old Bethal road in Trichardt.

No repair work has been carried out one year later on the collapsed section of the old Bethal Road in Trichardt.
Ridge Times reported in January 2025 about the collapsing road on the left emergency lane at the bridge from Trichardt, heading towards the scrapyard.

The Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport MEC, Thulasizwe Thomo, was joined by the executive mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM), Nhlakanipho Zuma, during a visit to the affected area on January 9, 2025.

“We conducted an assessment of the damage and are committed to ensuring that our response teams are mobilised to carry out the necessary repairs promptly,” said Thomo during the visit.

Now, a year later, GMM spokesperson Donald Green said in response to media enquiries that the MEC conducted an assessment and ‘realised’ the road belongs to the Govan Mbeki Municipality.

“The municipality complies with supply chain processes, and a service provider will be appointed soon to fix the road,” said Green.

Since the collapse, the sinkhole has been filled with gravel, and the caution sign remains in place.

However, upon closer inspection, deep holes are still visible, and bushes are growing where the gravel was placed in the collapsing road.
