Thunderstorm damages homes and churches in Lekwa
Communities are advised to avoid crossing flooded areas, as strong currents and rising water levels can pose serious risks.
A severe thunderstorm accompanied by heavy hail and gale-force winds damaged homes, churches and other properties in parts of Lekwa Local Municipality on September 17.
According to the municipality, about 13 houses and two churches were affected, with several households reporting that their roofs had been blown off.
Lubabalo Majenge, the municipality’s communications manager, said no families were left homeless despite the damage.
“The municipality’s Disaster Management and Fire and Rescue Services remain on high alert and are responding to the needs of affected communities,” said Majenge.
Majenge said disaster relief had already been provided to affected households, while food parcels and mattresses would be distributed to families as part of the municipality’s ongoing relief efforts and urged residents to remain vigilant and take the necessary safety precautions during adverse weather conditions.

Residents who have experienced storm-related damage and have not yet reported it are encouraged to contact the Municipality Fire and Rescue Services on 017 712 5551 so their needs can be assessed and assistance provided where possible.
Majenge said the municipality will continue monitoring the situation and provide further updates as necessary.
