Another body found at open substation in Standerton
Reports once again indicated his attempt to steal cables and the electricity in the area was interrupted.
A man’s body was discovered at the open substation in Baumann Street, Kosmospark the evening of Wednesday, August 24.
The communications department of the Lekwa Municipality issued a notice after the power interruption at 18:57.
An attempt was allegedly made to steal cables.
Earlier this month, Tshediso Michael Motlounga was electrocuted at an open substation in Mill Street, industrial area as well.
Reports once again indicated his attempt to steal cables and the electricity in the area was interrupted.
A water leak around the substation has been reported quite a number of times to Lekwa and businessmen had tried their utmost to address the situation.
They were willing to cover the box completely, at their own cost, but Lekwa however, then pointed out that it would be illegal.
Andrew Uys, businessman in the area, said on Thursday, August 25 that the substation was covered the same evening of the incident, but that the water leak has not been repaired.
The Standerton Advertiser published an article in May about incidents of cable theft and vandalism.
Lekwa urged the community in the past to report cable theft at the nearest police station, saying this cost them millions of rands to replace.
A request was previously made at Lekwa to furnish statistics on cable theft and another WhatsApp-message sent to the communications officer, Thando Nkosi, on August 11.
The newspaper had already contacted the communications manager, Thobeka Mtshiselwa, on May 19, requesting statistics, if any, on cable theft.
Mtshiselwa replied the same day that the request will be sent to the relevant department.
Lekwa was checking their records on cable theft on May 20 and no statistics were available at the time of going to press.
The newspaper contacted Capt Gibi Mtsweni, communications officer of Standerton Police, on Thursday and asked whether the deceased has been identified as yet.
Family has to be notified first before a name can be furnished.
