Secunda’s Robokids go to nationals

Learners enjoy new challenge of building robots.

SECUNDA – Three teams of the Robokids Robotics Club in Secunda qualified to go to the next round and take part in the provincials and nationals.

Robokids’ junior teams will take part in the Explorer World Robot Olympiad’s national championship in Johannesburg on September, 16, while the senior teams will compete in their national championship on September, 17.

The junior robotics learners have to build and programme a robot that replaces a gardener.

This robot must be able to cut grass, collect weeds and move a garden home into the correct position.

The senior robotics learners’ task is to build a rescue robot.

The rescue robot must be able to find injured people, find the fire objects and dispense water to the fire objects.

The owner and coach of the Robokids Robotics Club, Jillian August, said this is the first time that her learners are competing at this level.

She is proud of them for making it to the nationals.

At the Robokids, children get the chance to incorporate science, technology, education and robotics to develop their creativity and problem-solving skills through challenging and educational robotics competitions.
