Residents’ views on township development in Standerton taken seriously

One suggestion is that relocation for the development at the Standerton River Park takes place or alternatively, that bank funding be allocated to upgrade existing infrastructure.

Ward 10 had a community meeting at the Standerton Town Hall on Thursday, September 8 where feedback on important issues was given.

Wilma Venter, councillor for the Freedom Front Plus, reported on the sewage line in Coligny Street, the proposed township development and revenue enhancement.

Work on the sewage line in Coligny Street is 40% completed in which 19 manholes were completed and 23 household connections repaired.

An agreement with the taxi association was reached and four lanes will be closed for one month.

Phase 3 was scheduled to begin on Monday, September 12 with two excavators in operation.

Venter said the 12-month-project, which began on August 12, is expected to near its end a lot sooner.

As regards to the proposed township development, Lekwa Municipality is awaiting feedback from the Development Bank of Southern Africa.

The community was quite vocal in their response to it.

A public consultation meeting took place at the town hall at the end of July.

With regard to revenue enhancement, the indigency policy allows for residents with an income of less than R4 500 per month to apply for relief.

They will get 50KW electricity and six kilolitres of water monthly and any additional consumption is for their own account.

Application forms are available at the councillor and ward committee members.

Residents need to submit an ID, proof of income or an affidavit about lack of income.

“The community suggested that the municipality invites residents to a consumer day for details on the account system to be rectified,” Venter concluded.

“This suggestion has to be put forward to Lekwa.”
