Al-Imdaad Foundation distributes sandwiches at Bethal Hospital

Many patients leave home early in the morning to seek medical treatment or medication at government hospitals and clinics and have to endure long hours of waiting in line.

For many, there is no time to grab breakfast before leaving their homes to make their way to the hospital.

This is where the Muslim community of Al-Imdaad Foundation saw the need to distribute sandwiches to those who are waiting in line.

“As citizens of this country, we felt it was an indictment on us to witness young and old patients in such conditions, who sometimes faint before seeing the doctor, all because of hunger,” said Al-Imdaad Foundation’s head of department for South African projects, Abed Karrim.

The Slice for Life campaign was founded in 2009.

Members of the foundation weekly hand out sandwiches to patients visiting outpatient departments or any department that the hospital board recommends.

This project is currently operating at 40 public health facilities countrywide.

“We are positive that this endeavour will bring much comfort to those in hunger,” said Karrim.

The Al-Imdaad Foundation has also supplied and delivered relief aid and humanitarian assistance worldwide in over 67 countries, including South Africa.

The foundation is also part of the Disaster Management Advisory Forums at various levels in South Africa.

The foundation also partners with poverty eradication programmes in South Africa such as the District Development Model and the Invest Rural Initiative.

It costs about R8 260 per month for 100 sandwiches per day.

This cost includes bread, peanut butter, labour and packets for the sandwiches to be put in.
