Foundation in eMbalenhle wants to help others fights depression and suicide
Depression leads to suicide, according to Khumalo.
Cyril Khumalo nearly took his own life, as well as that of his son (9) due to depression.
Khumalo, the founder of the Emmanuel eMbalenhle Foundation, shared this dark moment in his life with people attending the foundation’s campaign ‘Say No To Suicide and Depression’ held at the eMbalenhle Sasol Club on March 4.
He said depression is a silent killer of which people are not aware and many suicides emanate from depression.
“After my mother passed away some years ago, when I was still young, my family shut the doors for me and forced me to live in an orphanage.
“My life was difficult and I could not make ends meet. I nearly ended my life because I told myself that I have nothing to live for.
“It was even worse when I was unable to provide for my baby boy who was born out of marriage,” explained Khumalo.
“A depressed person often shuts out others who could have helped you because you believe they are part of your problems,” said Khumalo.
Khumalo saw a need to establish an organisation that can bring professionals to help the depressed.
He said eMbalenhle has many people committing suicide for different reasons, such as marital problems, unemployment and family issues.
“Since the Covid-19 pandemic struck down our country’s economy, many people lost their jobs and income while some marriages fell apart.

“Many people are unaware that they are suffering from depression. Some commit suicide, thinking that it was the end of the world, like here in our township.
“There is a spike in suicide because of the life challenges that led to the depression,” said Khumalo.
Khumalo said his foundation intends to build a centre where professional people will give the community emotional and spiritual assistance.
Khumalo and young volunteers are currently working from his home, where they are always welcoming young and old with different life challenges.
