Substation goes up in flames in Secunda

Consumers residing at Jan Smuts Street, Trichardt Road, McKay Street, Oliver Tambo Drive and Louis Botha Street are affected.

Residents have been without power for days after a main substation went up in flames along Helen Joseph Drive on March 21.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown.

At the time of going to print, a private company came in to help after Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) had to withdraw their TLB due to a burst pipe.

GMM’s media spokesman Donald Green said the municipality apologises for the prolonged unplanned power outage that is affecting some of its customers in Secunda.

Consumers residing at Jan Smuts Street, Trichardt Road, McKay Street, Oliver Tambo Drive and Louis Botha Street are affected.

“Due to the severity of the damage, these areas are switched off. The municipality had sourced the damaged material and cannot determine the cause and cost of the damages currently,” said Green.

He said technicians are on site repairing the damaged ring substation.

“It is not possible to estimate at this stage how long these repairs would take, however, technicians are doing their best to restore the power supply as soon as possible,” concluded Green.
