AfriForum fights against illegal dumping in the Govan Mbeki municipal area
Landfill sites are still a concern for the organisation.
Apart from fighting against illegal landfill sites in the Govan Mbeki municipal region, AfriForum is also fighting with the municipality about illegal dumping.
Jan du Plessis, the chairman of AfriForum’s Secunda branch, reported illegal dumping in Leandra, Lebogang and Secunda to the municipality many times and even included photos, but he has not received a response.
“And the illegal dumping continues,” said Du Plessis.
He reported the illegal dumping taking place on the road to the landfill site in Leandra, the corner of Second and Begin streets in Leandra, Oos Street in Leandra, Northern and Southern streets in Ext 19 in Lebohang, Carl Bosch, Archimedes, Einstein, Echo, Heinz Thomas, Achmed Kathrada streets and DF Malan Street in Secunda.
Du Plessis said he plans to hand an official letter to the Govan Mbeki Municipality this week about the matter.
He also said since he handed over the audit report on the landfill sites, nothing has been done or changed at any of the landfill sites he visited when accompanied by municipal officials and the contractor appointed by the municipality to maintain and manage the landfill sites in the Govan Mbeki municipal region.
